Keely Delaney

I am a Brookings native and have lived in the area for much of my life. When I was 18, I joined the United States Navy and was deployed three times to various parts of the globe. My military experience gave me the opportunity to grow in many ways and I am a proud member of the veteran community. I left the beaches of Florida and moved back to South Dakota in 2005 to pursue my education at South Dakota State University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in English in 2009 and my Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2012.

I have experience helping clients with anxiety, depression, grief/loss, suicidal ideation, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, anger management, conflict resolution, communication, and adjusting to major life changes. I use a variety of approaches based on the needs of the client including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Therapy. As a lifetime learner, I am constantly working to hone my skills to provide the best care possible. Don’t be surprised when you hear me say, “So I was reading the other day…”

When I begin to work with a client, I prioritize building a strong therapeutic alliance based on trust, authenticity, respect, and humor. I believe that this helps create a context in which positive change is more likely to occur. I work with a four-legged “co-therapist” named Ash, a miniature Australian Shepherd who loves her job and is finishing up her “official” Therapy Dog credentials.
